Review by Bobbie

Sixteen year old Hazel survived lung cancer, but she lives tethered to an oxygen tank. She hates school, normalcy, and cancer support group. Until the day she meets Augustus Waters. A match made at cancer kid support group. Getting to know Augustus is both an unexpected destination and a long-needed journey, pushing Hazel to re-examine how sickness and health, life and death, will define her and the legacy that everyone leaves behind

Plot: 4 out of 5

I have had loved ones who have died from cancer so I was hesitant to read this book at first. I didn’t want to read some fluffy stupid teen romance novel that happened to be centered around one of the most brutal killers around today. So what finally won me over to Fault in Our Stars? Hipster quotes on tumblr. Once I realized where they were from I knew I had to read this book. And to be honest? The plot blew me away. How the author could put so much power, so much gut wrenching emotion, and so much rawness into one little book is beyond me. It just shows how much talent John Green possesses. Unlike certain authors today, John Green is far from overrated.

Characters: 4 out of 5

I loved Hazel. She was funny, witty, and real. I felt she was kind of mean to her parents at times, but the author redeemed her in the end. Her romance with Augustus was so real and just adorable. I shipped them so much.  I didn’t feel like the romantic aspects of the book were rushed at all. And while Augustus and his fake cigarettes did annoy me (only because Hazel had lung cancer) everything else about him was adorable. The other minor side characters were likeable enough. Except for a few that you’ll have to wait and meet.

Overall Writing: 4 out of 5

First off. Wow. What a book. I don’t even know what to say except that my feelings have been ripped out of my chest. This book just touched me in so many ways. At first I thought it was another overly hyped young adult novel, but as I started reading I realized that Fault in Our Stars isn’t. This book was raw, dark, and real. I don’t regret reading it. It will probably break your tear ducts and put you on a rollar coaster, but you need to read this book.

Total rating: 4.5. This book is a favorite of mine. It’s recommended for ages 16+ due to a graphic (yet mild) romance scene, language, and emotionally disturbing content involving cancer patients. You can find this book on Amazon.com

I loaned Fault in Our Stars from my local library

First of all — what a cool concept for a new site!

Second — this would have been a “hesitant read” for mea

Ugh — toddlers hit enter before I was ready.

*This would have been a hesitant read for me as well — just sounds a bit forced as a potential plot…. but it sounds like I would be wrong! 🙂
