The Wish by Gail Carson Levine Review

The Wish

Wilma Sturtz is invisible and miserable at school. So when an old lady on the subway offers her a wish, Wilma immediately asks for popularity — in fact, she asks to be the most popular kid at school.

Suddenly, Wilma has more friends than she can keep track of, forty dates to the Grad Night Dance, and a secret admirer writing her love poems. Everything is great, until she realizes there’s a loophole in her wish, and her time in the spotlight has almost run out.

Plot:

Ah, beautious fluff. I needed something quick, simple, and light to read the other day. My head was foggy due to the strange Southern weather in which the land turned to Spring for a few weeks (go figure. I don’t get it anymore than you) and I could not take anything heavy and confusing. And, you know what? This was perfect. I got my easy, quick read in, while still having something enjoyable.

This book isn’t slow. It cuts right to the chase. I liked that. I didn’t have to go with the usual, cliche rundown. While most likely for younger readers than myself, I found this lighthearted and enjoyable. I never had to yell at the author over evolitry. You have no idea how happy that makes me.

Plot: 4 out of 5

Characters:

I loved Wilma. She was amusing, and real, and saw it for what it was most of the time. Which was beautiful. Honestly, she was smarter than most of the YA female cast I’ve seen. While it was a short book and everyone wasn’t expounded upon as well as they could have been in something longer, we’re left with a group of people that we feel that we could become friends with if we knew them. I really liked Ardis, for example. While we don’t really know her, I saw the basis for someone great, and overall had a good opinion of her. And I found unibrow Jared amusing. Points (inside joke with the book).

Writing Style:

I had no complaints at all with the writing. It was perfect for a MG novel. Amusing, to the point, and altogether enjoyable. Gail Carson Levine does not disappoint. Everything was clear, and easy to understand. Honestly, even though I’m technically in the YA category (age wise), I find that this is something everyone can enjoy, and I like that.

Writing Style: 5 out of 5

Overall: 4 out of 5. Great, quick read. Recommended 10+. There were some kissing scenes, so I’ll leave that to parental decision, but it was a good, clean book, really. Want to buy it? You can find it here on Amazon.

I bought this book with my own cash.
