The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton Review

The Outsiders

In Ponyboy’s world there are two types of people. There are the Socs, the rich society kids who get away with anything. Then there are the greasers, like Ponyboy, who aren’t so lucky. Ponyboy has a few things he can count on: his older brothers, his friends, and trouble with the Socs, whose idea of a good time is beating up greasers. At least he knows what to expect-until the night things go too far.

Plot:

This. Was. Amazing. I honestly had no clue what I was in for when I bought this. All I knew? The yard-salers were some pretty great salespersons and got me to leave with a bunch of books I didn’t really want to read. But books are books. I love books. So, when I picked this up last week, it was because it looked like a quick read. I like quick, fun reads.

The Outsiders was one of the most beautiful books I’ve read in a long time. I’m not going to say much because me trying to say just about anything I’d like to say might give away what happens. All I can say is that I love this book. It even made me cry–something very few books ever do.

Plot: 5 out of 5

Characters:

I felt like I knew who the people I was reading about were within the first few pages. Hinton described them so perfectly and I could see them in vivid color throughout the book. My heart was tangled up in their lives and I loved each and every one of them. Usually there are a few characters that I’m supposed to like, but I don’t. That wasn’t the case here. I just loved them all. I cried over them, smiled over them, and altogether just enjoyed my time with them, and it was very sad when the book ended.

Characters: 5 out of 5

Setting/Writing Style:

I can’t remember if this book ever said exactly where they were. Wouldn’t surprise me if I missed it, but even if it wasn’t there. . . I didn’t care. Usually I do, but I could just see everything around me so perfectly. I felt like I knew how things ran there. Which brings me to my next point: This writer is a genius. She made everything so clear and sucked me in with her writing. Just that first line drew me into the book. This book was a work of art to me.

Setting/Writing Style: 5 out of 5

Overall: 5 out of 5. As obvious, this book did not disappoint me in any way, shape, or form. Recommended for 14+ due to violence, but I’ll leave that to parental decision. Interested? You can find it on Amazon.
