Earth Star by Janet Edwards Review

Earth Star

Romance, science fiction, action, and a look at the false assumptions we make about others combine in this light-hearted, fun, and well-conceived science fiction future.

Only She Can Save the World.

Eighteen-year-old Jarra has a lot to prove. After being awarded one of the military’s highest honors for her role in a daring rescue attempt, Jarra finds herself – and her Ape status – in the spotlight. Jarra is one of the unlucky few born with an immune system that cannot survive on other planets. Derided as an “ape”- a “throwback” – by the rest of the universe, Jarra is on a mission to prove that Earth Girls are just as good as anyone else.

Except now the planet she loves is under threat by what could be humanity’s first ever alien contact. Jarra’s bravery – and specialist knowledge – will once again be at the center of the maelstrom, but will the rest of the universe consider Earth worth fighting for?

Plot:

I really enjoyed Earth Girl by Janet Edwards. It was a fun twist on a futuristic, sci-fi world and, better still, a story set on one girl’s comedic revenge. It used archaeology as it’s link back to our present and this made it fun, exciting, and new.

Earth Star? Kind of reminds me of the History channel, and not in a good way.

Basically, Edwards takes us from a thrilling book based around futuristic archaeology and history and then throws us into Earth Star and our focus goes from history to aliens. I’m sorry, Ancient Aliens fans.

Now that I was away from all the plot points that thrilled me in Earth Girl, all I could see were cheesy lines, a romance plot intertwined with jealousy, and . . . aliens. Maybe it’s just personal preference, though. I have yet to find a book with an alien plot that I like.

Plot: 2 out of 5

Characters:

The characters were just lacking for me. Like I said, with the absence of a plot that I find enjoyable, the dialogue felt like a bunch of cheesy lines. This in turn left the characters seeming cheesy, washed out, and kind of flat.

I really don’t know what to say about the characters other than that. I don’t dislike them, but I don’t like them either. I really just don’t know.

Characters: 1 out of 5

Writing Style/Setting

The lack of plot really threw off the writing style for me. That’s all I’ll say there. It was fine, but I go back to my thoughts on the dialogue.

I absolutely adored the setting in Earth Girl and I was really excited to see that again, but what I really loved about the setting was the mix of past and future on the archaeological dig sites. Earth Star changed this too, and the setting change rather depressed me. I wouldn’t say the setting is bad, but I was sad to find that it wasn’t what I was expecting.

However, if you don’t mind aliens, you should totally go for this book. Like I said, I really enjoyed Earth Girl. This one just wasn’t for me.

Writing Style/Setting: 3 out of 5

Overall: 2 out of 5 stars. I have enjoyed Janet Edwards in the past, but this one just wasn’t for me. However, if it sounds like something you might be interested in, you can buy it on Amazon for $13.86.

I was provided a copy of Earth Star to review honestly. All opinions are my own and are in no way affiliated with the author’s views or the views of the publisher.
