Hey, all! It’s Alexa, and for the first time in ages, I am hosting an interview! Coolness, right? So everybody, please welcome Jennie K. Brown, author of new Middle Grade paranormal fantasy Poppy Mayberry, The Monday.

How did you decide on the powers for each day?
While sitting at a red light, I saw something that made me think, “What if you have magical powers based on the weekday of your birth?” Then I thought, if I were to have magical powers, what powers would I want? And the ideas/corresponding days just popped in my head from there!
Aw, that’s so cool! I love it when ideas just fall into my head like that. It’s the most fun feeling. 😀

Are any of the characters modeled after anyone?
I think many of my characters are modeled after a mix of people I’ve encountered throughout my life. Family members. Students. Strangers I’ve met while traveling. I will say, I do have a brother named Willie (Poppy’s brother). And Pickle (Poppy’s dog) is totally inspired by my yorkie Gia.
Haha, cool! Also, I love the name Gia. <3

What’s your favorite part of the writing process?
My favorite part is writing the first draft. I am more of a pantser than a plotter, so it’s during the drafting process, when I have an AH-HA moment, that I enjoy the most.
I AM A PANTSER TOO *high-fives* And, yes! The ah-ha moments are the best.

Do you listen to music as you write? If so, what’s your favorite song/soundtrack/album right now?
Nope. Well, no music in particular. I listen to whatever’s playing in the background of the local Panera Bread, coffee shop, or restaurant.
Coffee shop symphony. That works. 🙂

How’d you get into writing and publishing?
I’ve always liked to write, and when I wrote my first full-length novel I did some research into what the next steps would be for publication. So I took that next step in finding an agent!
Cool!

Any future projects in mind?
Right now I am just focusing on edits to book 2 and the drafting of book 3. Of course, I always have tons of ideas floating around, including one idea I’m not talking a lot about yet. 😉
Oooh, super secret then? Coolness. Look forward to hearing more about that when you can talk about 😉 *secret writer handshake*

Advice for aspiring writers?
Don’t give up. Keep querying. Keep writing.
*nods* Solid advice.

What would your powers be if you were born in your world?
Haha! I would be a powerless Saturday. The irony’s not lost on me.
LOL, now that is irony. And final question…

If you could go back in time to any time, what time would it be and why?
Easy one.. I would spend a day with William Shakespeare in the early 17th century. Well … it’s William Shakespeare … that’s why! 😉
lol, that is a good reason! Thanks so much for coming over and being interviewed, Mrs. Brown!

So how adorable does this book sound? (read the description below if you haven’t already. Trust me, it’s great). And looking at the list below, what would your powers be? I was born on a Tuesday, so teleportation for the win! lol

Monday – telekinesis (move things with your mind)
Tuesday – teleportation (move wherever you want to go)
Wednesday – electricity manipulation (control the flow of electricity)
Thursday – telepathy (mind-reading)
Friday – invisibility
Saturdays and Sundays – powerless

What if your teacher could read your mind just because she was born on a Thursday? Or the kid next to you in class could turn back the clock just because he was a ‘Wednesday”? In the quirky town of Nova, all of this is normal, but one thing is not—Poppy Mayberry. As an almost-eleven-year-old Monday, she should be able to pass notes in class or brush her dog, Pickle, without lifting a finger. But her Monday telekinesis still has some kinks, and that plate of spaghetti she’s passing may just end up on someone’s head. And if that’s not hard enough, practically perfect Ellie Preston is out to get her, and Principal Wible wants to send her to remedial summer school to work on her powers! It’s enough to make a girl want to disappear…if only she were a Friday.
